Federal legislation recently signed into law requires that schools receiving E-Rate discounts on telecommunication services and Internet access provide online safety education for their students. Schools will soon be required to institute policies that focus on online behaviors including cyber bullying, responses to Internet predators, and social networking interactions.

For almost a decade, Web Wise Kids (WWK), a national nonprofit organization, has delivered a proven, research-based approach to Internet safety education that can help schools in our area effectively meet this new requirement.

In response to alarming and current statistics on inappropriate Internet behavior, Web Wise Kids' award-winning, highly interactive games offer a positive, preventive, and proactive way to collaboratively engage youth, emotionally and cognitively. These games, based on real life situations, are distributed primarily through training sessions for local school personnel facilitated by WWK trainers.

At a glance, Web Wise Kids' programs are:

• Effective: Several years of data have demonstrated that the approach the games use to teach Internet safety to students and adults is most successful. The games precipitate meaningful conversations between youth and adults as well as peer-to-peer discussions.

• Proven: Over ten million children and thousands of parents have already put WWK programs to use and response to the games from students and adults has been most positive.

• Broad-Based: The richly interactive Internet safety programs are implemented in partnership with school districts, educational organizations, law enforcement, educators, parents, community-based youth organizations, and technology companies.

• Supported: The programs were chosen to be part of the federal initiative, Project Safe Childhood.

• Standards-Based: Educators nationwide have expressed appreciation for how well WWK games tie in to state standards, how they incorporate peer-to-peer learning, and how easily they can be integrated into existing curricula.

To prepare for the new E-Rate requirement and to provide meaningful Internet safety education now for our children, we have the opportunity to purchase a middle school game and two high school games for our students at very reasonable prices.

It is extremely important to keep our youth safe online. I am writing to you to ask for your assistance in acquiring Web Wise Kids' unique Internet safety games. The cost for the 3 games and instructional support is $995.00.
